How fast is the Compsognathus?
The Compsognathus was one of the fastest known dinosaur. Scientists have used biomechanical computer models to calculate its possible top speed and, depending on the study, it is around 60 to 65 km/h.
This means that this theropod, which was only about a meter long and the size of a chicken, could theoretically run faster than today's ostrich and significantly faster than the fastest human. However, these values are only model calculations, because the actual movement in life remains only speculation.
Nevertheless, the calculation shows that small, light carnivores in the Jurassic period could have overwhelmed other animals by running quickly.
